Historical Background
An inquisitor was an official in an inquisition, an organization or program intended to eliminate heresy, and any other things frowned upon, by the Roman Catholic Church. Though it it usually refers to any number of historical expurgation movements against heresy, it can also refer to an ecclesiastical tribunal that prosecuted heretics. The word "inquisitor" literally means one who "searches out" or "inquires".
