Historical Background[]
Witch-Hazel (genus Hamamelis) is a genus of shrubs or small trees found on North America and Eastern Asia. Only 4 species are found in this genus: Hamamelis virginiana (North America), Hamamelis vernalis (North America), Hamamelis mollis (China), Hamamelis japonica (Japan). The name comes from the Middle English word wiche, which means bendable and Hazel is derived from the Hazel trees, whose twigs could be used as divining rods; Witch-Hazel could also be used as divining rods.
