My name is Picket, and I play on Titan server. I have been playing FFXI since March of 2004. I'm a slow player and tend to go on quests and such in preference to leveling. I only reached Level 75 with my first job, THF, in August of 2006, over two years after starting. My primary Linkshell for many years was SoramimiCake on Unicorn server, comprised of my friends from college, my sister and brother-in-law, and a few friends I met on Unicorn. However, most of them have moved on from FFXI, so I switched to Titan where I had other friends and started my own version of SoramimiCake.
I started playing on March 27, 2004, after watching one of my college dormmates play for about a month and becoming a big fan of the game. This was right after the PS2 release, so I was a member of that player generation. I'm really glad I was, too, it was a lot of fun!
I knew I wanted to be a Galka, because they are big and buff, which I am not in RL. In a weird twist of fate, an amateur music composition I had created some years before sounded just like the Bastok music, so it seems like I was destined to be a Bastokan Galka. I chose the nation without ever seeing the city first, so that I could be surprised--and I'm so glad I did, because I think Bastok is the coolest of the starter three.
I initially picked Warrior as my first job, because I liked the versatility. Due to being a complete newb of the PS2 Boomer generation, I leveled up to WAR33 subbing Thief and wielding a sword and shield. But after I switched to Great Axe, I loved it and continued to use it from there out.
At level 58, after becoming disenchanted with WAR, I switched to White Mage. At the time, Astral Rings were only 200,000 gil each, so I saved enough to buy one, then sold my Utsusemi: Ichi scroll (worth exactly 200,000 gil at the time) to get a second one.
After leveling WHM to level 57, my linkshell, SoramimiCake, started a static group, in which I was picked to play Thief to support our Ninja tank. THF was my first job to reach level 75 in August of 2006, over two years since I started playing. I still use THF for most questing and solo work.
I worked for a while on Merit Points for Thief in the Soramimi static, in addition to leveling Blue Mage, which I found to be a very exciting and versatile job. My linkshell also started a second static, "Soramimi Cupcakes," in which I was playing Paladin, but the group disbanded due to scheduling conflicts. I took a sabbatical from playing for a long time at that point.
Now, in the spring of 2008, four years after I started, I've returned to Vana'diel once again. This time, I am focusing on Paladin, which I absolutely love. I am also enchanted with Puppetmaster, but that is going more slowly due to expensive equipment and lack of party invites.

I'm not the biggest fan of hunting high-prized NMs for fame and fortune, but I do like killing those I come across while traveling, or those rare odd ones where there is little competition for the spawn. (Note - a 0/0 score means I was either defeated by the mob or that I fled after attacking. For Abyssea NMs, the first number refers to atmas I personally received rather than overall drops) Here's my record thus far:
- Picket is an English word meaning sentry.
- This character is named after the Al Bhed robot, Picket, in FFX-2.
My main character, created on March 27, 2004. His full name is "Picket of Bastok," chosen because of his pride at being Bastokan. His Hume-given name (which he does not use) is "Does Nice Things with Fabric," although which Hume gave him this name or under what circumstances is not known.
He initially came to Bastok after growing up in a small settlement in North Gustaberg, being brought up from a newly-reincarnated boy by a mysterious Galka he knew only as "Big Daddy." When Big Daddy's time came for reincarnation, he sent the young adult Picket away to Bastok. Though sad to leave the only father he had ever known, Picket was excited to finally see the big city he had heard so much about growing up. While applying for citizenship, Picket got the chance to meet Iron Eater, who became his idol in the ways of the Warrior. Inspired, Picket decided to join the Adventurer Corps. of the Musketeers.
During his tenure with the Musketeers, he met and befriended Zeb. Later on, Zeb would become his employee as a Mule. Zeb introduced Picket to Sarabhi, a Musketeer recruit. Picket and Sarabhi eventually became intimately close, with Picket adopting Sarabhi as a foster sister. However, during a mission to Yhoator Jungle, Sarabhi was killed in the line of duty before Picket's eyes. Horror-struck that he could not save her, Picket vowed to lay down his Great Axe and devote himself to the healing arts.
Picket then took a sabbatical from the Musketeers and moved to Jeuno, in order to study medicine with the famed Doctor Monberaux and become a White Mage. After studying there for a few years, Picket transfered to San d'Oria to study higher level Healing Magic in the San d'Orian Cathedral. It was here that, as a favor to his mentor, Doctor Monberaux, Picket began to research the status of the Marquisate of Tavnazia, the affairs of which Dr. Monberaux had become involved. After learning through Prince Pieuje some of the travesty perpetuated by other nations in the Great War, Picket devoted himself fully to discovering the truth about Tavnazia. He traveled through the darkness of Promyvion to reach the Archipelago, and came to know the people of the Tavnazian Safehold. Torn by the abuses they had suffered at the hands of the Grand Duchy, Picket joined with the Tenshodo in a covert operation to smuggle necessary goods to the struggling people of the Marquisate.
His membership in the Tenshodo forced Picket to learn the ways of the Thief, but using his new skills, he was able to expand his smuggling considerably, to the point of garnering the attention (and ire) of Archduke Kam'lanaut. Fearing both the threat of arrest as well as that his ties to the Tenshodo would place the entire organization under scrutiny, Picket fled to the Empire of Aht Urhgan.
Having left his possessions and friends behind, destitute and needing work, Picket joined Salaheem's Sentinels and became a trainee of the Immortals, beginning life anew as a Blue Mage, which he continues to this day.
He currently resides wherever the wind takes him, learning the forbidden arts of Blue Magic.
- The name Zeb is derived from Zevulun, a Hebrew name meaning dwelling of honor.
- This character is named after the adult film star, Zeb Atlas.
My main mule, created in Summer of 2004. Her full name is Zebulen Danrall. A purpose-driven and serious individual. She is the daughter of a prominent Bastokan senator. As such, her early life was one of luxury and privelege. When Adventuring became popularized after the Crystal War, Zeb joined the ranks of Adventurers together with her fraternal twin sister, Megara, on a whim.
Initially choosing to both train as Monks, Megara found it difficult to keep pace with her more talented sister and was ignominiously slain by a Goblin in Valkurm Dunes. Zeb thereafter abandoned her Monk training and became obsessed with White magery, determined to find some way to bring her sister back. She used her father's political connections to gain access to the Windurstian Optistery's wealth of information on ancient Dark Magic and Summoning techniques. She continues passionately studying to this day, trying to create a Raise spell to bring back the long-dead.
After a debacle in the Bastokan senate in which her father's ties to the Tenshodo black market were revealed to the public, the Danrall family's enormous estate holdings were seized by the government, leaving Zeb destitute. Seeking employment, Zeb took the position of a Windurst-based assistant to the Bastokan Musketeer, Picket.
- Calathea Burlemarxii, also known as "Blue Ice Calathea," is a rare tropical plant with a bloom of frosty blue.
- Calathea's face choice was inspired by Audrea Tautou's haircut in the film, Amélie.
My second mule, created in 2005. A spritely young Mithra woman who makes up for her lack of forethought with sheer determination of will. Originally hailing from Kazham, Calathea Burlemarksehi was banished from the village after straying too close to the dreaded Blue Rafflesia flower and being marked with its scent, which is highly offensive to sensitive Mithra noses. Though she was able to remove the smell by journeying to far-off Bastok, she was much too ashamed of her foolishness to return home to the jungle.
Instead, she journeyed to Windurst, hoping to join the Mithra colony there. However, she met with much antagonism from the local Mithra population due to being a Kazham native. Disheartened, she instead set her sights on the Kingdom of San d'Oria, having heard tales of their valiant knights and wanting to learn more. Once there, she fell in love with the forests of Ronfaure, which reminded her of her homeland. She decided to make a home in the kingdom and take up the Great Axe of a Warrior.
While there, she met the trickster Elvaan, Alphonsze, who, in a ploy to wheedle into Picket's smuggling operation, tricked Calathea into carrying stolen goods via Airship to Jeuno. The hapless Mithra was caught by the Ducal Guard and put into jail. Although her sentence was suspended, a condition of Calathea's probation was that she remain within the city limits.
After hearing of how he was an indirect cause of her plight, Picket offered her a job managing his Jeuno affairs, which Calathea accepted.
- Alphonsze is a derivation of Alphonse, the French form of the German Alphonso, which is derived from Hildefuns, an Ancient Germanic phrase meaning prepared for battle.
- Alphonsze's name was inspired by Alphonse Elric of Full Metal Alchemist
My third mule, created in 2006. Born to a family of minor San d'Orian nobles, Alphonsze enjoyed and the comforts and indolence of a youth of his station. However, being the youngest of a large family, Al was low in the chain of inheritance and grew both bored and bitter at his father's favor towards his older brothers. He began engaging in minor schemes and deceptions for his own amusement and profit. These gambits ranged from simple pranks to outright theivery, and often a mix of the two--as when he stole Curilla's undergarments from the palace and sold them to the highest bidder.
Eventually Al learned of the Tenshodo and attempted to garner their attention in order to receive recognition and join them. His ploy caused Calathea a great deal of trouble and earned him the ire of Picket, who by the time was a high-ranking Tenshodo member. Fearing retribution, Alphonsze "took a vacation" to Windurst. He is now stuck there thanks to his father cutting him off from his allowance after being informed by Picket.
