When he was younger, Lord Hoster Tully, his older brother, ordered him to marry, but he refused. This led to years of quarreling between the two. In one particularly heated quarrel, Lord Hoster called him the black goat of the family, to which he retorted that he should be a black fish since the trout is the sign of House Tully. He then took the black fish as his personal emblem and became known as the Blackfish. The quarrels only ended when his niece, Lysa, got married, and Brynden entered the service of Jon Arryn (A Game of Thrones Ch 35). Shortly before Lord Jon died, he appointed Brynden Knight of the Gate (AGOT 3). Ser Brynden greeted his other niece, Catelyn, and her party when they arrive at the Bloody Gate and escorted them to the Gates of the Moon (AGOT 35). Alarmed at the course of events in the Riverlands, he decided he must return there to help fight Lord Tywin Lannister's army. He asked Lysa for permission to go to the Riverlands with a contingent of kinghts, but he was refused (AGOT 41). He therefore resigned his post as Knight of the Gate and took ship with Catelyn for White Harbor (AGOT 41, AGOT 56). When they joined up with her son, Robb Stark, and his army, Robb placed him in charge of the outriders and screens for the army as it divided to deal with the armies of Tywin and Jaime Lannister (AGOT 60). He stayed with Robb's contingent as commander of the outriders and led the van in the Battle of the Camps (AGOT 70).
