This weapon appears to be a homage to Square-Enix's anime and manga series 'Fullmetal Alchemist', with Edward Elric's usage of alchemy to frequently turn a portion of his auto-mail arm into a sword during battle. On the contrary to such, this weapon would be nigh-useless in battle on Final Fantasy XI.
