Historical Background[]
The word ‘Tapana’ has Sanskrit origin which means ‘illuminating’, a ‘burning desire’, or 'scorching, tormenting.' It is one of the Narakas (types of hell) in Buddhism and Hinduism, where individuals are boiled until they dissolve. It is also a Vira (Buddhism: male spiritual hero/daka), one of the 36 pairs of Vira and Dakini (who have 4 arms from the pairing), paired up with Tapani, a Dakini (Buddhism: female spirit/demon) (Wisdom Library).
