Feeding Results Testing by Holthaus & Friends

This section is a collective effort to discover all the different results of feeding items to a monster in monster rearing. As you confirm items, please add them! I will do my best to update daily as a I go through my experiments. This section will also let the experienced editors organize the new section for Feeding Results on the Main Page as we go along. Fully-grown monsters

Monsters not evolving

I'm having trouble getting my current monsters to evolve. I've fed 4 3-eyed Fish to my Urganite youngling and I get the "squirms uncontrollably" message each time, but when I zone out and back in, it's still an urganite younglin. Same issue with my dhalmel calf; I've fed it two papaka grass so far and got the squirm message each time, but no evolution. The calf is at 3 stars and the urganite is at 2.5 stars. I raised a baby lizard to an ivory lizard with one feeding just fine. Am I doing something wrong? Is it common for higher level monsters to need more than one feeding? I have the calf set to "personal growth" style but the urganite is on "enjoy the moment" because I want the variant evolution. Please reply if anyone can help! Thank you! -- Anobi (talk) 18:24, December 1, 2015 (UTC)

The rank 3-ish monsters can be real bitches to evolve. You don't know suffering until you try to evolve a Hecteyes. Just keep at it. --Korvana (talk) 21:43, December 1, 2015 (UTC)

Ah, thanks! I was going crazy thinking I had glitched my game or something. Good to know SE is just messing with me. -- Anobi (talk) 04:17, December 2, 2015 (UTC)

FAQs

Great job Holthaus! I am inspired by your project and will begin my scientific contributions, starting with the new monsters. I will also take the time to compile your findings in the main article. Be sure to check what "new cheers" are available due to your having raised several monsters of same/different type, and add those to the table. Korvana (talk) 21:07, December 15, 2014 (UTC)

@Korvana - Much obliged, my friend! Will do! And thanks for your couple of great guides you have on the site as well! (2013 New Player's Guide by Korvana & Solo Assault Guide by Korvana) -Holthaus (talk) 14:30, December 20, 2014 (UTC)

When a monster gets to near-maturity, do you need to feed it multiple evolution items? I fed my baby eft a Lesser Chigoe and got the "squirms uncontrollably" message, but it became a regular eft. So either I need to feed it multiples, or Veyndal is wrong. Korvana (talk) 02:22, January 4, 2015 (UTC)

Hello again, everyone. Thanks for your patience during my holiday break. @Korvana - It seems dependent on a few factors. I believe most animals require a minimum of two evolution feedings to evolve how you wish. However, I too have experienced feeding one thing to reach a target evolution and receiving the other. During the break, I was trying to raise Saplings up to Red Foliage Treants for my next quick feed testing target because that was all I had time to deal with in the game. I fed a Potion once near maturity and it matured to the Green Foliage Treant. I tried Potion on another Sapling and received a Red Foliage Treant the next day. All the other feedings were Distilled Water for both Saplings. I tried Potion twice on another and received a Red Foliage Treant with only Distilled Water on the other feedings. All of this was taking place during the special event time for harvesting twice per day, and made me deduce two things:

1) There is some method where meeting a threshold with only one evolution feeding may create a random choice instead of a targeted one. 2) There seems to be some method of points relating to a light/darkness mood scale that kind of roughly follows this idea:

a) Strongly resonates - +2 points b) Surprisingly not worthless - +1 points c) Stares off in the distance - 0 points d) Did not go over well: -1 point e) Is visibly angry with what you just did: -2 points f) Varying negative fractional points deductions depending on the animal for doing nothing in a given Japanese day, to which Saplings a fickle punks. I killed them (to which, I think kill harvesting might be more in line with live harvesting results than previously believed). g) Harvesting from an animal appears to be about a -0.9 or -0.95 on points reduction in the mood scale.

By the above rough, unconfirmed method, it appears that Saplings and any animal will mature on its own in a base evolution order, like Baby Rabbit to Rarab, without using an evolution feed but applying positive mood points toward the threshold under the base method. One evolution feed may cause a random result for the next level. Also, I did have one Ram be created from only feeding La Theine Cabbages for a few months, which seemed odd but may also be related to the Personal Growth parenting style over time. It is also entirely possible that the points method of determining maturity is vastly different on the above values for different animals, but this will require testing by someone to confirm either case.

The January 14, 2015 Update instituted a new 3 star system of maturity display when checking on the animal. This is an interesting clue as to what the background points system really is for each animal and what level of growth is triggering the evolution threshold when feeding evolution inducing items. -Holthaus (talk) 20:05, January 17, 2015 (UTC)

The following questions were moved up from the feed/interaction testing sections:

--Can you clarify what you mean by "confirmed after 2 feedings and squirmings in its fully mature state, which is approximately twice as tall as a medium-sized Hume created character"? Does that mean the Ram is "approximately twice as tall as a medium-sized Hume" or does that mean, contrary to what one would normally expect, you have to wait until the Sheep's infancy is complete (i.e. "approximately twice as tall as a medium-sized Hume") before starting to feed it Great Boyahda Moss? If the latter, is there any particular feed that will expedite the maturation process so that the Great Boyahda Moss can be fed for Sheep ---> Ram conversion? Also if the latter, do you know how long it takes for the Sheep to reach the size of "approximately twice as tall as a medium-sized Hume"? --Quixorbl (talk) 22:01, January 8, 2015 (UTC)

--Update to previous post: I did not get the "squirming" message when my Sheep's development was 2 filled-in stars plus 1 dot. I finally got the "squirming" message when I fed my Sheep a Great Boyahda Moss when it's development was at 2 filled-in stars plus 1 outline-only star. --Quixorbl (talk) 16:37, January 20, 2015 (UTC)

@Quixorbl (talk): When I created that format, we did not have the star system in place that returns information when you check on the monster. From what I have observed from growing saplings, "squirming" will not take place until after 1 full star of growth. At that point, feeding an evolution item like a Potion should result in the third post feeding text line of "the monster squirms uncontrollably". It looks like this will mean different monsters will have different evolution "sweet spots", and so as a group we need to pay attention to that going forward, mainly for the Great Boyahda Moss crowd and their Ram attempts from trying to evolve Wild Sheep. As for the use of Hume character size question, it was all I had to go on at the time (my character is a medium-sized Hume as per the character creation screen), and I will probably pull that comment once we can confirm the earliest possible Great Boyahda Moss "squirming" result from feeding. However, due to its rarity, we may be in for a long wait to confirm the exact star count for that. I had a Ram evolve while using only La Theine Cabbage for about 2 months straight, but I can't yet explain why that happened and am attempting a 2nd round to confirm if the evolution was the intention from such long use of a single item or as a result of the personal growth parenting. -Holthaus (talk) 14:52, January 24, 2015 (UTC)

Prior to the stars system, I fed a seemingly-close-to-maturity Baby Rabbit a Red Moko Grass, and it evolved into a White Rabbit after zoning!

Recently, I fed a Baby Raptor Cockatrice Meat every day ever since it had 2 stars, and it squirmed each day. It got to 3 stars and stayed there for a solid 5 days, eating Cockatrice Meat and squirming, and today just evolved into a normal raptor.

From this I conclude that: (1) Monsters will evolve normally about 5 days after reaching 3 stars (or perhaps 10 days with only feeding or only the Personal Growth style), (2) Cockatrice Meat belongs in Baby Raptor -> Raptor, (3) in the 5-day evolution window, attempts to evolve a variant will succeed instantly (or randomly), and (4) "evolution foods" (i.e. those that make a monster squirm) that aren't tied to a variant behave no differently than any other "strongly resonates foods".

I would also suggest that Holthaus' result of obtaining a Ram after two months of La Theine Cabbage feedings is a result of SE making it easier to obtain Rams in the January update.

Holthaus, some clarification on your Saplings -> Treant test would be useful. Did it seem that Potion would yield a Red Foliage Treant instantly after giving it? It's possible that a Sapling very very close to maturity would mature normally when given any food, and that you must trigger the "variant" flag before this occurs. Did any of your Saplings become Green Foliage Treants when fed only Distilled Water, or did they remain Saplings, or did some become Red Foliage?

Please read through the Monster Care and Feed sections on the main page, and let me know if your findings agree with my theory.

Korvana (talk) 20:23, February 11, 2015 (UTC)

I changed up the format of feed testing to better match the left-to-right order of presentation on the main page.

With the star system, I had an instant zone & return evolved animal as well, and I expect this will now be the norm.

1) Concur 100% on the 5 days. I have not tried a 10 day either-or trial, but it makes sense and will see if I can work it into the rotation of testing in the coming weeks.
2) Looks like someone got it in there. :)
3) Concur 100%.
4) Yes, but some foods that evolve a creature will only give a "surprisingly not worthless" result no matter what.

I believe the Ram result from La Theine Cabbages over that one two-month period has been pulled from the game. I have not been able to repeat the result.

I did get Green Foliage Treants from Distilled Water-only feedings. Some of the squirming Potion results for the Red Foliage Treant took five to seven uses on two occasions. That test was done before the January 2015 update and does not appear likely to be repeated now, but I am reorganizing creatures and expanding rearing from the February 2015 update and will update here with what happens as I regrow those two animals.

-Holthaus (talk) 23:40, February 26, 2015 (UTC)

I recently got a Sea Monk Larva to evolve into the blue Sea Monk variant at around 2 stars, quite by surprise as I was anticipating having to wait until it reached 3 stars. If you manage to grow a Green Foliage Treant with a Fiend Blood at 2-2.5 stars, that can be reflected in the Monster Care section where it currently says "One of the foods appears to have no effect, aside from improving the monster's mood and growth level."

Also I assume you're referring to the Baby Rabbit: Red Moko Grass feed on point 4. Point taken.

Korvana (talk) 00:45, February 27, 2015 (UTC)

I hope you do not mind, but I checked against the collaboration below and added my own findings that I had started in a spreadsheet a little while ago. I also added entries of baby/young urganite and colibri to the lists because mine look smaller than normal monsters, and it fits the pattern. If there isn't a young variant of those two for some reason, then my findings can just be merged as adult versions since I have been holding back maturity on those two pets to test food. I have a baby eft that I am attempting to mature with lesser chigoes as well currently. I'll try to remember to document what happens here.--Ladygith (talk) 17:27, February 28, 2015 (UTC)

By all means! The rank 1/2 monsters all have a "normal adult form" and a "variant adult form", and we've had confirmations of Sea Monk Larva -> (unknown) blue variant and Uragnite Youngling -> Limascabra so far (you can confirm the name of the species when you get its memento; if you do this, just overwrite every instance of the name in the main page). Also note that babies can evolve into adult variants as early as 2 stars, or into normal adults at 3 stars, but all adult monsters will start over again at 0.5 growth. Examining your monster before feeding it is a quick way to notice when it's matured.

When my Baby Eft matured into a normal Eft, it simply became larger and retained the same colorings. I'm fairly sure a Tarichuk is dark blue and striped, so look out for that when you're testing Lesser Chigoes. I am very curious about this result.

Korvana (talk) 17:58, February 28, 2015 (UTC)

I saw today that the JP wiki lists mementos of a child, regular adult, and variant adult for all of the rank 3 monsters; so it is most likely that our assumptions on the pattern are correct.

As for the eft testing, I am considering releasing mine and starting over for the purpose of data quality. I noticed the other day it went to a half star growth which would indicate it matured to an adult, but the last three days of feeding and interaction specifically targeting food/interactions that have been noted as different indicate it is still a baby eft. (I already received the baby memento prior as well) I also noticed my ram on another character had a growth reset (and I've been raising that ram forever now), and all of that would have occurred around the time of the maint/update fixing the feeding name glitch recently. While it is possible that the fix simply reset the baby eft's growth, that character is also a taru and thus everything looks big in comparison anyway. ;) The qiqirn's focus had been on the new pets at the time of maint., and not on the ones that appear to have been affected. I noticed no change on my third character with pets, but her parenting style has been set different on the old pet. I figure I would mention this in case anyone else may have also seen a strange occurrence around that time. --Ladygith (talk) 18:36, March 2, 2015 (UTC)

Received "Colibri chick memento" today on the taru, confirming the baby stage. I adjusted the main wiki page to reflect this (and also fixed someone's entry formatting for another memento while doing so). The memento unlocks beehive chips with the moogle. --Ladygith (talk) 18:05, March 4, 2015 (UTC)

Tarichukconfirm
I can confirm today that feeding Lesser Chigoes should result in a Tarichuk. With the retest I fed only Lesser Chigoe and today received the squirming message at 1 1/2 stars. Re-zoned into the garden after to find an adult Tarichuk, which looked like this:

Beaming with Pure Contentment

I discovered that when a monster "beams with the light of pure contentment! There is nothing that can foul its mood right now, including gathering items from it." you can get a positive reaction even from monsters who don't like to be interacted with. I haven't tested on all the types of pets who don't like to be interacted with, but can confirm when I chose "get angry with it!" as my interaction with my King Behemoth pet while he was beaming with contentment, he strongly resonated with it instead of getting visibly angry with me. I think this may apply to all mobs who have no preferred interactions, such as the various Behemoth varieties and the White Adamantoise. -Phoenixtail

Edit: My Behemoth was beaming with pure contentment again today so I tried "Yell loudly at it!" and it strongly resonated again. I think all interactions are good on "pure contentment" days.

Squirming

It seems like the following stars are needed for a monster to squirm (aka chance at evolving):
Baby Monster: 1.5 stars
Adult Monster: 2.5 stars

Backlinks

  • I've updated all item pages that have been listed on this page under 'Feed' via Template:Monster Rearing Feed transcluded via Template:Used In. The layout for the former is up for modification if you think it could look better.
  • Because of this, all items that are listed for Evolution are also noted under that template.
  • For all of those items, I've appended a new header Collected From under the How to Obtain section, noting Put Downs where necessary.
  • What I haven't done is go through all of the non-feed collected items and append the Collected From section on each of those pages. A job for another day, or another person.
  • I'll watch the page in case of any further updates!

Mood

I noticed today (along with others above) that naming some critters (namely a baby rabbit, in this case) elicited the "surprisingly not worthless" string of hearts animation from them (and the rabbit's mood went from "slightly discontented" before naming it, to "duly satisfied" right after). It looks like the mood enhancement from naming might work with most, if not all, critters.--Snorglepuss (talk) 18:24, May 17, 2018 (UTC)

Skill Bonus from Cheers

In January 2016, User:Danallen edited the notation about the Skill bonus to state that Combat and Magic skill bonuses were Skill Gain Rate, then clarified that the Crafting skill bonuses were actual skill bonuses.
On the official forums, Nyarlko pointed out that the Japanese translation is "裁縫スキル上昇率+1% = Clothcraft skill gain rate +1%". Checking in-game shows no gain on the 'skills' page (an uncapped skill of 100 should raise to 101 and it doesn't), not that it necessarily would.
To that end, I've reversed the change and added Skill Gain Rate to the cheers that affect crafting too.

Alkaline/Acidic Humus (new feed September 2019)

The Alkaline Humus and Acidic Humus weren't obvious to their category of foodstuff. I had expected them to be either Fungi, or possibly Greens or Seeds, as those categories are quite broad. However, having fed a variety of feeds to the Mandragora Sproutling, from the reaction that occurred, the category for these two Humus items can be inferred as 'Gems', which is slightly odd.
--Haldarn (talk) 15:12, 16 September, 2019‎ (UTC)

Maybe 'Minerals' is therefore a better categorisation?
--Haldarn (talk) 09:02, July 16, 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure about 'Minerals', but it does seem like a better category. And I don't have anything better to offer.  :) Minerals basically are inorganic and crystalline, while humus is organic. They can be separate, or mixed together. I couldn't come up with a term with some commonality for the crystals and the humus.--Snorglepuss (talk) 23:28, August 14, 2020 (UTC)

Berries

In testing all Fruits, I discovered 3 (Kazham Peppers, Habaneros and Thundermelon) that varied from the rest as a group in monster reactions [1]. The Adamantoise family in particular points this out, as they all react favorably to the aforementioned Berries, but unfavorably to the rest of the Fruits. Berries IRL are actually a sub-classification of Fruit, and are their own classification because of their large number of seeds and their type of rind/husk. After a fair amount of research, it was the only commonality I could find for those 3 feeds.--Snorglepuss (talk) 21:41, July 14, 2020 (UTC)

I also wanted to add that these particular berries have this in common: they're "stimulating" (per the habaneros description), doing bad things to your tongue. The hot peppers burn the crap out of it, and the thundermelon has an electric current that "numbs your tongue." I think this is why Watermelon doesn't fit the category, even though it's a berry.--Snorglepuss (talk) 02:59, July 17, 2020 (UTC)

Great find! I'll go through and add berries to all of the talk pages shortly. Just working on a slightly modified template this morning in my sandbox; will post a link when completed so you can see what you think.

'Normal' Evolutions

At time of writing, there are 17 monsters (listed below) that are listed to only evolve at three stars with no specific food. With the exception of the Mandragora family, these are all base-level monsters. However, 7 other base-level monsters have a feed which evolves them sooner. I postulate that, out of the 44 feeds that currently do not directly cause an evolution (see main page, items not in bold), 17 of these do actually cause an evolution in base-level monsters and that this information is missing because of early assumptions in-place since Monster Rearing was first introduced, possibly due to a later change added in.
I'll be testing the below on their test pages, but please do join in!

  • Baby Lizard
  • Baby Cockatrice
  • Baby Raptor
  • Baby Eft
  • Sea Monk Larva
  • Uragnite Youngling
  • Immature Crab
  • Baby Colibri
  • Coeurl Cub
  • Buffalo Calf
  • Mini Slime
  • Mandragora Sproutling
  • Mandragora
  • Adenium
  • Korrigan
  • Tiny Bugard
  • Baby Adamantoise

--Haldarn (talk) 09:02, July 16, 2020 (UTC)
Update: It's taken a month, but I've used 43 of the 44 feeds on 2.5/3 star Mandragora (plenty on the Sproutlings too, before they evolved normally) and not one of them procs squirms. The only feed unused was the Deluxe Carrot, which I'm presuming is something bought for chocobucks once you have obtained a certain chocobo raising/racing title; content that I am only part-way through so don't have access to those options on the vendor. I call my theory a bust.
