Reduction of Enmity lost[]

Has there been any testing for clarify exactly what is meant by "Reduced Enmity lost" when using sentinel? Sentinel itself mitigates damage directly, so just by that alone, Cumulative Enmity (CE) loss is reduced. Does Guardian simply further reduce CE lost? Does Guardian also affect Volatile Enmity (VE)? Such as slowing the decay over time?

It almost seems a waste of a merit ability if it simply compounds an already potent effect. Fishyflop 22:32, January 12, 2010 (UTC)

From what I've seen the tables from Kanican's/Kaeko's testing for enmity are spot on. You are right, Sentinel does reduce CE loss because of the formula:

 [ CE Loss ] = 1800 x [ Damage Taken ] / [ Target Max HP ]

So, I have 1456 as a 75PLD/37WAR Elvaan with full Iron Ram Hauberk set, and taking say, 5 damage when Sentinel is first active (and thus damage is reduced the most as Sentinel's damage mitigation amount slowly decays), results in:

1800 * (5/1456) or 6.2. Most actions only give 1 CE, but things like Flash (180), Curing (variable), etc., give lots more. In addition, Sentinel immediately grants 100 CE, capping it out. Very nice.

Obviously, we tanks want to keep Enmity on both VE and CE as high as possible (if for nothing more than doing massive damage with Atonement and keeping the squishy mages alive). What Guardian does is it takes that amount of loss and reduces it. Here's what it does for that above example.

Guardian Level 1: 19% = Total Loss - 5 Guardian Level 2: 38% = Total Loss - 3.9 Guardian Level 3: 57% = Total Loss - 2.7 Guardian Level 4: 76% = Total Loss - 1.5 Guardian Level 5: 95% = Total Loss - 0.3

So, in a generalized way, with no Guardian, that 100 CE is lost in 16 attacks (100/6), Guardian L1 makes it take 20 attacks, L2 takes 26 attacks, L3 takes 37, L4 takes 67, and L5 takes 334. Obviously I'm probably not explaining it as best as possible, but while it's extremely possible to take hate away from a Paladin who has used Sentinel moments before (it's happened a few times but I can quickly regain hate), try taking it away from a Paladin with capped Guardian. It helps ALOT.
