I think this spawns in Woodlands too? -- Binarycow

Vocalization<->written

I disagree with the previous edit to change "an NM" to "a NM." While it is true that NM means Notorious Monster and thats what the reference is, typically NM is accepted as a word itself, and is not spoken. People will either say "I am camping a Notorious Monster" or "I am camping an NM." There is an argument for something like "a RDM" versus "an RDM," simply because no one says RDM, its used as an abbreviation. NM is typically spoken (en-em), and therefore I think the text should either read "an NM" or "a Notorious Monster", not "a NM." --TtOaXrIuCTC 12:06, 19 May 2007 (CDT)

Tried to verify...

Attempted to verify the claim that this can be soloed by a skilled Bst/Whm at lvl 63.

I attempted as a 67 Bst, my current lvl at the time I saw this note. As a 67 Bst the mobs that are around the Grand Marid spawn area con Tough for leeches and Tough to Even Match for tigers. Used a leech to start fight and it was getting hit for 150-230+ per hit, which is a lot considering its a leech which are considered one of the more durable pets. The leech was finished off rather quickly so I charmed a Very Tough colibri and 2hred for the added hold time. The colibri was being hit hard and the first chigoe appeared. It went for me instead of the colibri and hit me on average for 110-130 per hit.

I managed to use my Olduum ring to escape the chigoe and grand marid. Based on the amount of damage the grand marid does to pets which conned Tough and Very Tough, as opposed to the notes saying Lesser Colibri and Worker Pephdros could be used, which con Easy Prey to Decent Challenge, there is no way a Bst/Whm at 63 or even 67 could solo the grand marid...UNLESS...the Bst had outside help to deal with the Chigoes. I noticed that the leech pet did some damage to the grand marid and drop it to about 90% before it died. In theory it can be done over a long period of time but without any means to deal with the chigoe its not possible.FFXI-Revenant 10:12, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

It is definitely possible... because I did it. It is not that hard at all it just takes a lot of time. You charm your pet and send it at the marid... it'll die fast unless you have hate and kite it but that's not a problem unless you mischarm your next pet. Whenever they spawn a chigoe you just send your pet at the chigoe... it usually wins due to the chigoes horribly low HP but if it doesn't just charm again. In the meantime it is EXTREMELY easy to kite the Grand Marid around without any movement enhancement (NIN sub helps for shadows just in case the Grand Marid corners you and you need to run by it). It takes a long time and the Grand Marid will stay unclaimed for extended periods of time but it is definitely doable. I had no outside assistance whatsoever. Come to Bahamut and I will prove it to you with my 75 BST using the same pets... level should not have anything to do with the ability to solo them as long as you use the same pets except for the greater charm success rate. Just because you have tried it ONCE and failed does not mean that it is not possible. Rylus 19:01, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Also, Marids and Grand Marids only spawn up to 5 chigoes. After the 5th weaponskill they will no longer spawn chigoes and it makes the fight much easier... if you can deal with the first 5 chigoes then it'll be a just a long smooth fight. It's kind of similar to how RDM and NIN solo Genbu.... it's a challenge til he runs out of MP then it's just a long boring fight Rylus 19:09, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

While I have no reason to doubt or believe your claim, it just seems improbably that at 63 (which the original note claimed) can it be solo'ed. While you mentioned you were able to do it, you didn't clarify the lvl, unless your referring to the 63 note. At 71 (trio'ed the Grand Marid with some Bst lvling there) the chigoes that spawned were appearing as Toughs, that would make them VT or IT to a 63. The pets used would have to con Decent or Even Match and I know that both of us being Bst know that pet accuracy seems to be amazingly random at times. Now if the said pet missed a majority of its early hits then you would remain the main target of a VT or IT chigoe as it rips away at your shadows or stoneskin. I don't doubt you though on the kiting because yes its amazingly slow and there is ample room to operate. I see no problem kiting the Grand Marid and beating, its the chigoes that prove the hitch in this. During the trio we handled the chigoes while pets fought the Grand Marid, the average Accuracy on the 3 of us was around +35, the memember with the most had +55 Accuracy in gear and still couldn't consistently land his hits, he missed 5 of his first hits. Granted he survived longer cause the chigoe was causing less damage, 40-80 per hit, with 1 100+ crit but at 63 thats where this damage would be a lot more than at 71.

As gracious as your offer is to have me go to Bahamut to witness this, it would be a lot easier (unless your generousity extends to paying for the transfer fee) to just record and post it on youtube. Years ago no one would have believed the NMs Avesta solo'ed were even soloable until he posted his proof. While Avesta is by no means an ordinary Rdm, I do recognize you to be the more experienced Bst on this matter but this single attempt by me was to test the claimed note and I even failed to adhere to the exactness by attempting this at 67, 4 lvls above the note.

Reason the note was removed was to avoid misleading other Bsts. Its the same reason I removed a note on a particular ENM regarding a Smn strategy. All it did was claimed it being duo'able by Smns yet there was no mention which avatar to use, which blood pact, which if any foods/meds, if wipe/reraising was required etc. It was misleading to Smns attempting the ENM, same for the Grand Marid. You are welcome to post in the Talk:Discussion your exact strategy on soloing him at 63 so another 63 Bst can attempt and verify. Anyway no disrespect whatsoever to you, just wary of claims w/o any solid strategies to address the fight factors or video proof. FFXI-Revenant 09:06, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

The level of the chigoes is pretty irrelevent as all it takes is a single crit to kill one, and even if you can't crit it only takes a lesser colibri a few hits to take one down because they have incredibly low HP. Sometimes it will take a couple pets to take down a chigoe and that is the only real challenge in soloing marids as a BST via kiting. It is quite an easy feat if you can manage to stay alive while your pet is taking hate from the chigoes. Never try /WHM... it pulls too much hate with cures. --Rylus 19:06, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
