I fished at G-9 (very close to the #3 Bivvy). Composite Rod + Fly Lure. 1/3 attempts to land the KI. ~Acidod <Phoenix>
I followed this advice. Same location, Composite + Insect Ball though. Got NM once, Jagil once (both disappeared cause I had Sneak up) then KI (KI had the most jumping around of the rod).User:Rslogic
I got the pickaxe on like my third cast by the river mouth with a Mithran Fishing Rod and a worm lure. (broke carbon/sabiki rig and halcyon/fly lure other locations caught nothing but NM with them). --Brimstone (talk) 02:11, April 14, 2013 (UTC)

It took me a long time to fish up the item, but when I joined a reive, canceled my reive mark, and fished in the middle of reive monsters, I got the key item my first try, so there may be some weight to the claim that it increases the chance of obtaining the pickaxe.--Blue Donkey Kong (talk) 21:45, May 4, 2013 (UTC)

Caught with Carbon Fishing Rod and Worm Lure at (J-9), near the River Mouth. Fished up Delectable Orobon by accident, so beware. Got the KI after ~20 minutes, which includes the time it took to kill the NM.

- After some experimentation, I suggest a new location: South of the Frontier Bivouac station, past the lair revive, all the way south to the far east part of the beach in J-9. In taking 5 mules there to do the fishing, the far east part of the beach seems to be out of the wandering mobs zone, thus, no aggro and no wasted time fighting wandering mobs. It's still a craps shoot; One mule (skill 11) caught the KI on the first attempt; the worse (skill 41) was after about 11 minutes of fishing.
