Historical Background[]
In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Stolas (also spelled Stolos) is a demon with the rank and title of Great Prince of Hell, commanding 26 legions of demons (some accounts say 25). Stolas often appears as a crowned owl, a raven, or a man. Stolas is said to teach astronomy and knowledge of precious stones, as well as poisonous plants & herbs. Stolas is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and 1 of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon). Given the choice of appearing as a raven, it makes sense Square-Enix selected the Bird monster type for Stolas, though the brown variety would have been more suitable (as some mobs named Raven are the brown-colored Birds), geography likely played the defining role (Quon continent tends to have the pink variety, Mindartia continent has the brown variety).
