Historical background

In Scandinavian mythology, the Skogsfru (proper spelling spells it as one word, also called skogsrå) was a woman of the woods or wood-sprite. She was a female spirit who often appeared nude and having long hair from the front, through from the back, she had a cow’s tail or fox’s tail and/or was a hollow tree trunk from the back. It was considered very bad luck for a hunter to encounter her in the forest. She was often visit hunters at night when they had a campfire going and try to lure them into the dark woods to have sex, where they would never return. The Norwegian Huldra and Swedish Tallemaja were analogues to the Skogsgru. Skogsgru is Swedish for “lady of the forest”.

Skogsfru is also the Swedish name for Epipogium aphyllum, called the ghost orchid in English, a plant that is white & yellow in color due to lacking chlorophyll. It is found in forest soil.
