Combat Skill Ratings

Samurai have inate job access to the following skills, at the levels given. Other skills may be available due to support job selection. All Samurai skills are combat skills, the Samurai has no access to any magic skills.

  • Great Katana: A+
  • Parrying: A-
  • Evasion: B+
  • Polearm: B-
  • Archery: C+
  • Sword: C+
  • Throwing: C
  • Dagger: E
  • Club: E
  • Race Selection

Final Fantasy XI allows players to choose between five different races, each with its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of stats. While certain races' stats are better matched to some jobs more than others, the differences are never so profound as to prevent any race from playing any particular job (except for Elvaans and Black Mage). All players can excel at any job they so choose, provided they have the skill and the equipment; the race selection is mostly an aesthetic decision.

    Support Jobs Options

    Warrior

The most consistently reliable of the common support jobs for Samurai, Warrior provides good stats in all melee areas and a variety of passive and active abilities. Berserk increases both normal attacks and weapon skill damage consistently, while Defender aids survivability in an emergency. Provoke is a necessary tool for Fuidama setup when partying with a Thief after level 30.

    Warrior Support Job Abilities

    SAM10/WAR5 Provoke
    SAM30/WAR15 Berserk
    SAM50/WAR25 Defender
    SAM70/WAR35 Warcry

    Warrior Support Job Traits

    SAM20/WAR10 Defense Bonus
    SAM30/WAR15 Resist Virus
    SAM50/WAR25 Double Attack
    SAM60/WAR30 Attack Bonus
    SAM70/WAR35 Resist Virus II

    Thief

Directed more towards "spike" damage than the Warror support job, Thief directs incredible power to only weapon skills with the use of Sneak Attack. After level 60 the addition of Trick Attack also means that the Samurai will not have to deal with the "Hate" generated by the weapon skill. Thief support job also places enemy markers on the Radar compass, enhancing the Samurai ability as puller.

    Thief Support Job Abilities

    SAM10/THF5 Steal
    SAM30/THF15 Sneak Attack
    SAM50/THF25 Flee
    SAM60/THF30 Trick Attack
    SAM70/THF35 Mug

    Thief Support Job Traits

    SAM10/THF5 Gilfinder
    SAM20/THF10 Evasion Bonus I
    SAM30/THF15 Treasure Hunter
    SAM40/THF20 Resist Gravity
    SAM60/THF30 Evasion Bonus II

    Ranger

Samurai is one of the few jobs which can benefit from a Ranger support job. The actual tactical uses of Ranger abilities vary from Samurai to Samurai. One of the most obvious benefits of the Ranger support job is access to the Archery weapon skills. However, Samurai Archery skill caps as a C+ skill, and as a result Accuracy and Attack are affected compared to a Ranger. The usefulness of Ranger support job may therefore be influenced by the choice of targets, as Samurai Archery use will be more effective on lower evasion enemies. Use of Archery for TP gain is also a common tactic, as Store TP operates by multiplying TP gain, and is more obviously useful on long delay, high TP weapons like longbows.

Ranger, like Thief, features Radar positions of hostile enemies, and also allows use of Wide Scan to locate specific targets.
