Historical Background[]
In Judaism and Christianity, Raphael is one of the archangels. As his name implies (Raphael means something along the lines of "God has healed"), he was connected to all forms of healing. He is mentioned in the Book of Tobit, where he is said to have been sent by God to heal the elder Tobias of his blindness and to deliver Tobias' daughter-in-law from the devil. In this role of healer he is also known to Catholics as the patron saint of medical workers.
