Historical Background

"Rajas", or rajoguna, is a Sanskrit word that refers to the quality of restlessness, activity, or passion; it is linked to Shiva the Destroyer in the Hindu Trimurti. Rajas is seen as an excitable force, but also includes lust. It is contrasted with the quality of tamas and sattva. The force of Rajas promotes action, change, mutation, passion, excitement, birth, creation, and generation. Rajas is seen as less positive than Sattva, but less negative than Tamas. Even though Rajas is the pursuit of pleasure, it will eventually result in pain.
