Historical Background

Tribe of pygmies reported to exist in Africa in Greek mythology. The Pygmaioi differed from the real Pygmys in that they were only 1½ feet tall, rode goats like horses, and would hunt migrating cranes. While it would make more sense for them to be the black variant of Mandragora, to the Greeks, they were viewed as diminuitive white-skinned humans.
