Historical Background

All imbued cells used in Salvage are named after various cloud formations.

Praecipitatio is Latin for “precipitation”, but in this context, it appears to refer to a type of cloud formation. It can apply to a wide array of clouds.

Cumulus praecipitatio

This is a cumulus cloud (large, puffy, cottony cloud) which is producing rain. Essentially, it is a cumulus raincloud.

Stratus praecipitatio

This is a stratus cloud (flat, sheet-like cloud) which is producing rain. Essentially, it is a stratus raincloud.

Altostratus praecipitatio

This is an altostratus cloud (gray-toned blanket clouds that span hundreds of miles) which is producing rain. Essentially, it is an altostratus raincloud. These clouds tend to form in weak rain systems and tend to be found between 6000- 20,000 feet.

Nimbostratus praecipitatio

This is a nimbostratus cloud (dark blanket clouds) which is producing rain. Essentially, it is a nimbostratus raincloud. It would be differentiated between stratus praecipitatio and altostratus pracipitatio by the fact that nimbostratus clouds appear darker gray and producer more intense rainfall. These tend to be found 6000 feet or under and form where warm, moist air flows over cold air.

Stratocumulus praecipitatio

This is a stratocumulus cloud (low, unevenly shaped clouds) which is producing rain. Essentially, it is a stratocumulus raincloud. These clouds are found 6000 feet or under. These form where there are rising air currents in the sky.
