Planar Rifts are Used in Voidwatch events to call forth Voidwatch Notorious Monsters. They require a Voidstone and a stratum abyssite, either Jade, Indigo, Crimson, White, Ashen, Hyacinth, or Amber depending on the zone in which the rift is found. Some rifts may require an advanced version of these abyssites to spawn a monster in that zone which must be acquired by first defeating monsters from a previous tier of the abyssite's growth (i.e. the rifts in Maze of Shakhrami will not spawn Ogbunabali until both Virvatuli and Pancimanci have been defeated and the abyssite has been upgraded to Jade Stratum Abyssite II). Once the monster has been spawned, the rift will temporarily disappear until the spawned monster is either defeated and the spoils are collected from the chest, or the party is defeated and it despawns. As such, there is a limited number of Voidwatch Notorious Monsters that can be simultaneously spawned since there can only be as many spawns as there are rifts in the zone.

The planar rifts are also used to examine and upgrade Atmacite which become active during the battle, and for trading cells to increase spectral alignment before starting the battle. Any cells, such as a Jade Cell, would have to be traded to the rift before the battle commences.
