Job Ability

  • Limits area of effect of next song to a single target.
  • Obtained: Bard Level 20
  • Recast Time: 0:00:05
  • Duration: 00:01:00

Macro Syntax

  • /ja "Pianissimo" <me>

  • Functions only with AoE Enhancing Songs. Does not work with any Enfeebling Songs, or Enhancing Songs that are normally single-target, such as Etudes and Preludes.
    • If an ineligible song is cast while Pianissimo is in effect, the effect will not be lost.
    • EX: Horde Lullaby cannot be used with Pianissimo in order to make it only land on one foe. It will still AoE and Pianissimo will remain in effect.
  • Allows eligible songs to be cast directly upon other party members, whereas AoE Enhancing Songs normally can only be targeted (centered) upon the caster. In accordance with this change, eligible song casting range goes up to 20' when Pianissimo is active.
  • Shortened casting time on the next enhancement song (~50%).
  • As with standard song casting, if the target already has two songs active, Pianissimo will replace the song with the shortest duration remaining.
  • Effect/potency of songs cast under Pianissimo is unchanged.
  • The effect of Pianissimo can be removed manually.

Historical Background

In musical terminology, pianissimo means to play very softly. Playing softly makes the sound harder to hear (i.e. decreasing its volume and the distance at which it can be heard), which in FFXI terms would be changing the range from AoE to a very small, close range (single target in this case). Pianissimo is Italian for "very softly". Webster dictionary pronounces Pianissimo as "pē-ə-ˈni-sə-ˌmō".
