Historical Background
Phorusrhacos (pronounced "FOR-rus-RAH-kos") ("Rag-Thief", from Greek φώρ, thief, + ῤάκος, rag.[1]) was a giant, carnivorous flightless bird which dominated the South American ecosystem during the Cenozoic era (Tertiary and Quaternary periods), 65 mya- 3 mya. They stood 3-5 feet tall and were known as Terror Birds. Their wings had unique hooks on them which evolved to serve like arms which could be used to hack up prey. They could run very fast. They went extinct as the ice age changed the climate. Phorusrhacidae is a taxonomic family. Titanis is one of the genuses in this family.
