Historical Background[]

In Mesopotamian mythology (specifically Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, & Assyrian), Ninurta was the god of farming, wells & canals, floods, rains, thunderstorms, and the southern wind. He was responsible for the fertility of the agricultural fields and for healthy livestock. He is often depicted wielding a bow and arrow and a mace. This mace was called Sharur. He rides on a chariot pulled by a creature with the body of a lion and a scorpion's tail. He was depicted fighting Imdugud. He was the son of Enlil. His brother was Enki. He was the patron deity of the city of Nippur. He was associated with the planet Saturn. Ninurta means "lord of the earth".
