In Germanic folklore, Naglering (Norse: "Naglhring") is the sword of Dietrich von Burn (Norse: "Thidrek"). While hunting in the woods he captures a dwarven smith by the name of Alberich, who promises Dietrich a powerful sword and great treasure if he does battle with the giants Grim and Hilde. Dietrich agrees and lets the dwarf go. Later, with his foster mother Hildebrand, he meets Alberich at the giants cave, where the dwarf gives Deitrich Naglering, who had forged the sword for Grim but had stolen it, and leaves. Dietrich and Hildebrand enter the cave and battle the giants for three days. After killing the giants Dietrich receives, amongst other treasure, the helmet Hildegrim, named after the giants.
Similarly spelled, Naegling (Anglo-Saxon: "Nailer") is one of Beowulf's swords, used against the dragon that is ravaging his kingdom. The sword breaks when Beowulf strikes the dragon, not due to the dragon's strength, but due to the force Beowulf uses to strike the dragon. While Beowulf manages to defeat the dragon with his companion Wiglaf, he receives mortal wounds and dies shortly after.
