Historical Background
In Slavic mythology, Morana (Morena, Marana, Marena, Mora, Mara, Marzanna) is a goddess associated with Winter. She is believed to have brought all winter thunderstorms, chill, ice and death. A cultural practice of burning an effigy of Morana at the end of winter is still practiced in some slavic countries to this day.
