Historical Background[]
In Roman mythology, Minerva was the goddess of many things, including the arts, wisdom, protection, and defensive strategy (Wikipedia). The sin of intemperance (overindulgence in any passion, especially alcohol) is necessary to obtain this. Alcohol seems to be related to magic in this game (e.g., mulsum). All these things would help explain the magic defense.
