Historical Background

In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Marchosias (also spelled Marchocias) is a demon with the rank and title of Great Marquis of Hell, commanding 30 legions of demons. He is often depicted as a wolf, she-wolf, or an ox. Marchosias is considered a strong, skilled fighter and is known for being reliably honest to any conjurer who beckons him (unlike other demons). Marchosias was also known for his hope to return to Heaven after 1200 years of exile not as a fallen angel, but it is said that hope is delusional. He was said to have once been a Dominion (a category of angel). Marchosias derives from the Late Latin "marchio", meaning "Marquis" (so his title and name are redundant). This background explains why a Hell Hound was chosen. Marchosias is one of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and one of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
