Derivations[]
In Roman mythology, Lemures (sometimes called Larvae, though Larvae refer to malevolent spirits of deceased family members who roam the house, terrifying the living family members) were spirits of the dead who were malevolent. They were 1 of 2 classes of Roman spirits of the dead (the other were Lares, which were benevolent). They are the restless souls of evil people, wandering through the landscape at night, terrifying the living. The Lemuria/Lemuralia was held on May 9th, 11th, 13th to appease (using black beans) and/or scare them away (using loud noises).
The small mammal, the Lemur was named by Carolus Linnaeus after the Lemures from mythology because of their large eyes, bizarre noises they make, and nocturnal existence.
