Historical Background

A dragon in Greek mythology which guarded the Golden Apples in the Garden of the Hesperides, an island located out on the extreme western fringe of the world. It is sometimes described as having 1 head and other times as having 100 heads. One of Hercules 12 labors was to get the Golden Apples. He slew the dragon. Ladon was the offspring of the monsters Echidna & Typhon. Ladon's siblings were: Cerberus, Sphinx, Chimera, Nemean Lion, Lernaean Hydra, Ethon (the eagle that gnaws at Prometheus' liver), and Orthrus (2-headed guard dog). Hera memorialized the dragon as the constellation Serpens.
