Historical Background[]
In Albanian folklore, Kulshedra is a monstrous form that is part of the life cycle of the Bolla. The Bolla was a serpentine dragon with 4 legs and small wings. It has silver eyes. It slumbers year-round with the exception of Saint George's Day. On April 23rd, it awakens and looks out over the landscape. If it sees any humans, they will be devoured. After 12 years, the Bolla transforms into the Kulshedra (Bolla-Kulshedra is conceptually analogous to the Caterpillar-Butterfly/Moth). The Kulshedra was sometimes depicted as a fire-breathing dragon with 9 tongues, as well as horns, spines, and large wings or a giant woman covered in hair (sort of a female Bigfoot/Sasquatch). The Kulshedra causes water shortages and demands human sacrifices to return the water.
