Historical Background

Kogitsunemaru (literal meaning: "little fox", plus -maru, a suffix for the names of blades) was a sword whose legendary forging was told in the Noh drama Sanjoh Kokaji. The bladesmith Munechika forged it with the help of the Shinto rice deity Inari and the deity's fox servants.
