Historical Background
A Katzbalger is a short Renaissance arming sword, notable for its sturdy build and a distinctive s-shaped or figure-8 shaped guard. Measuring 75-85 cm long and weighing 1-2 kg. The Katzbalger Sword was designed with a large figure eight guard that protects the hand if the opposing sword should slide down the blade.
The Katzbalger is a shortsword used by the Landsknecht (mercenaries from the Holy Roman Empire) during the 1400s- 1600s CE. Katzbalger is German for “cat brawler”, referring to how cats fight, as the blade was intended for use in close combat. The Landsknecht were primarily known for wielding pikes, halberds, partisans, and zweihander though; the Katzbalger was a backup weapon for them.
