During the medieval period, the [[Heater Shield]] was a classic shield made of either wood or (usually) metal that was triangular in shape and used by cavalry. This shield, which was shorter than the [[Kite Shield]], was the most typical to bear markings of heraldry. By the end of the thirteenth century, a cut in the top right-hand corner of the shield was used to rectify difficulties with holding a lance in proper position.
