Historical Background

A gully knife was a Celtic term for a big multi-purpose sailor (including pirate) knife; this would explain the water resistance property. They were usually not pointed (sometimes by captain's decree, as mutinies were a real possibility), and so would have been used more for hacking than stabbing in a fight.[1]
