Historical Background[]

The Furies are a group of female avenging spirits in Greek mythology. Their Greek name was the Erinyes (The Furies is an English translation of the Latin name for them). There are three goddesses comprising the Furies: Alecto, Tisiphone, and Megaera. Alecto's name means "unceasing in anger", Tisiphone's name means "avenger of murder", and Megaera's name means "grudging" or "jealous". They were depicted as winged women wearing black robes with serpents forming a wreath around their head and blood dripping from their eyes. Sometimes they were depicted not with bird wings, but with bat wings and occasionally they were depicted with dog's heads. The Furies would hound anyone who committed murder of a family member, driving them mad and never relenting in their pursuit. They never haunted an innocent person because they were goddesses and they could detect the miasma, the pollution, caused by the crime on the perpetrator. They also never killed a person, only driving them insane and never giving them a moment's respite (of course, that madness would easily drive the murderer to kill themselves). When not hunting down criminals, they resided in Tartarus, the deepest pit in the Underworld. Note that they performed a different role from Nemesis, the Greek goddess who was the spirit of divine retribution against any mortal who showed hubris. The occasional depiction with bat wings and them being a trio explains why Bat Trios were chosen to be the monster representing them.
