Historical Background[]
In Eastern Slavic (Russian, Ukranian, Belarusian) folklore, considered the Eastern Slavic equivalent of Santa Claus (though Father Frost is depicted as tall and lean, but still old). He is considered the personification of Winter. The proper translation of his name is Grandfather Frost. In Russian, his name is Ded Moroz. His granddaughter is Snow Maiden. It is hard to sort out the mythology from the modern myth as Father Frost and Snow Maiden have become popular icons in modern Russian culture after the fall of the Soviet Union.
