We need an image policy in writing. Let's collaborate on this, and I'll try to compile it all in the project page. Give your ideas here as to what should go in the Image policy. For example, we need guidelines on overwriting prexisting images. See Special:Unusedimages. I also believe that, whenever possible, images do not contain the person that uploaded it. I don't think we should support people in getting their 5 minutes of fame because they stood in front of an NPC to take a pic of it. Just trying to get the ball rolling on this.. --Ganiman 15:37, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

I think that Images should be as follows::

  • Item Pictures should only be over-written in the cases where there is a see-through background which shows people or objects behind it and/or makes the information on the picture hard to see as well as if the picture has someone's name or server on it whether it be a signed item or some one simply writing their name and server willingly on the picture. I think that Item Pictures should be clear and legible and look like they should when either gotten as a drop, from an NPC or boughten off the AH.

  • I think that NPC, Mob or NM Pictures should be as clear a shot of an NPC/Mob or NM as possible with no Characters obstructing the view. With NPCs and regular mobs this is easy obtained since they are usually always a time where no one will be crowding them, but I do understand this is a bit more challenging with an NM, esp HNMs. It should be attempted though, We should get a clear shot of the NPC or Monster being displayed since the Page they are on is meant to be about them not about who is killing them or taking the picture. This is supposed to be factual and un-opinionated site in the respect that on the general pages, people's opinions are not supposed to be in play (that is what the Talk Pages are for) and being so, the pictures should reflect the pages that they are on. Any Pictures that have Characters in it should be limited to said Charactes User Pages.

  • That is my take on those kinds of Pictures. Should you also limit the general Size of the Pictures Downloaded so that no one downloads huge Screenshots that take up a huge chunk of Bandwith?? I think that would be a good idea if bandwith ever becomes a problem.

  • Maybe we should limit the amount of Pictures on a person's User Page? Not so sure about this one... but I think either one per Character or a Max of 3 Pictures depending on their size... But if the amount of bandwith this takes up or the size doesn't matter than this point doesn't matter.

  • Also - blocking unwanted or derogatory Pictures from being displayed might be good, I haven't come across any yet but it might be good to have that in place with all these new members joining and some that have no respect for what has been built. I don't know what else to add right now but if I come up with anything else I will comment. --Nynaeve 16:09, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Re: maybe we should limit the amount of Pictures on a person's User Page? Not so sure about that one
I was going to add some pictures to my fan fiction, so I wouldn't like to see this. On the other hand, I'm not paying for use of the site, so if it is an issue of resources, I would be willing to limit myself. --Pinkfae 16:14, 28 July 2006 (EDT)
I do believe limiting the amount of images on a user page is a good idea. I love that people use the user pages, but I don't want to see it turn into a MySpace.com page either.. --Ganiman 16:18, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Yeah, that isn't one of my big points, but it all depends on what the size of the pictures are. I know that Pictures take up a large portion of Bandwith in comparison to other things so maybe limiting the number or at least the size would make things better. The other Opinions I am stronger on though. --Nynaeve 16:16, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

As far as the huge image thing goes, I'm not tooooooooo concerned about it at this point. When you upload a giant image, and you set it as a [[Image:GanimanIsSuperCool.jpg|thumb]] that "thumb" part actually generates a thumbnail image on the server side and serves that up to the web browser. You don't actually download that huge image, unless you go directly to the image page. Another minus to huge images would be disk space on the server. But again, I'm not toooooooooo concerned about that right now. I'll start some framework on the project page here. Let's keep talking about this though... anyone else? --Ganiman 16:17, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Okay, I'll agree about the no PCs in the pic, but sure do love this shot:

Young Quadav

As for the substance of the argument ... if you're able to take a pic of a mob unclaimed, then you can take a pic of it without you in the pic.

--Mierin 16:29, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Reformatted my above comments and as to What Mierin said, I completely agree... on both the Pic being cute and the fact that you should be fully capable of taking a SS of the mob with you out of the Picture if its unclaimed. --Nynaeve 16:51, 28 July 2006 (EDT) (P.S. Why did that just let me post when i wasnt logged in...)

Also, someone should add this to the Template:New User. --Nynaeve 16:55, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

I agree with all stated here and have added it to the new user template. I think there should be something to indicate that pictures uploaded for personal-userpage use must be related to FFXI and be unoffensive and G-rated. If they are from the game the presumption is that it is acceptable, but photoshopped pics (of FFXI-related content) must be G-rated. --Gahoo 09:27, 31 July 2006 (EDT)

Also do not think that non-uploaded images should be allowed, as they cannot be monitored to ensure compliance with the above policies. --Gahoo 09:38, 31 July 2006 (EDT)

Do we have a category/template available for tagging images that aren't up to FFXIclopedia image policy standards? I may have been hallucinating, but I thought I came across it at some point. I can't seem to find it now, though. --Ichthyos 06:14, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

{{Picture Replace|This is blurry}}

Thanks, Gahoo! --Ichthyos 13:16, 7 August 2006 (EDT)

Is there a policy about USING images found on the site? I assume that images aren't allwoed unless public domain, but it's not specifically stated that uploaders are releasing them for use in the public domain. Radiumsoup 16:31, 11 October 2006 (EDT)

You are releasing them to the public domain, that's part of the wiki agreement, of which the Image policies are but stricter, more specific guidelines. Anything added/edited/or uploaded to a wiki is considered public domain. I can give you a specific link to the that as soon as I find it. --Chrisjander 15:56, 28 October 2006 (EDT)
Found it: FFXIclopedia:Copyrights --Chrisjander 16:00, 28 October 2006 (EDT)

Perhaps the guidelines should be expanded to discuss image formats. PNG doesn't have compression artifacts and would be best for item screenshots, while JPG should be used for mobs to preserve a reasonable filesize. Pixymisa 15:51, 28 October 2006 (EDT)

Ecarohs additons

I hope i'm not a violator or cause of this rule. I truly do go for the best shot. There is no way (practiclly) to get an uncalimed shot of NMs in Dynamis. AND most the time in my LS its pulled into the melee to die so quick I gotta take what I can get. I want the wiki to be complete and if someone can get a better shot thats great. I posted a couple of pictures today that didnt have a page and learned how to cut/paste a new page. Hope they came out ok.

PS I dont get in the discussion section often so send me a PM or something if I need to change anything. (If thats possible from here:P )

NEW! User Pictures NEW! Question

Does this mean older uses who already have a picture (like myself and many others) have to go back and edit everything? --Drow 20:36, 2 November 2006 (EST)

Sort of. I am editing anything that is under 30 myself and deleting everything else. So if you have over 30 and you have no copy of it you better go fetch it seeing as I will prolly soon delete it. But if it is under 30 I will rename it myself so it will follow the standards. --Nynaeve 20:41, 2 November 2006 (EST)

I always have a back-up D: Ok will spread the word. --Drow 21:42, 2 November 2006 (EST)
