Historical Background[]
In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Vine (also spelled Vinea, Viné) is a demon with the dual-rank Earl of Hell and King of Hell (not a Count), commanding 36 legions of demons. Vine is often depicted as a lion holding a snake and riding a black horse. He can talk of matters from the past, present, and future. He also can create storms, cause waters to become rough, and cause walls to tumble down. He can also be conjured to help build towers and discover witches. It is thought the name derives from the Latin word "vinea" meaning "vine" but also the name for an ancient warmachine made from wood and covered in leather and branches. Vine is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and 1 of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
