Historical Background

In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Raum (also spelled Räum, Raim, Raym) is a demon with the title of Great Earl of Hell (not Count), commanding 30 legions of demons. He appears as a crow, but can turn into a man at the conjurer's request. He can destroy cities and the dignities of men as well as steal treasure from the houses of kings. He can also talk of the past, present, future with certainty and can reconcile friends and enemies. Raum was once a Throne (a category of angel). Raum is the German word for "space, room, chamber", though it may be the shortened form of the verb räumen, which means "to evacuate, to empty". Raum is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and 1 of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
