Historical Background[]

A creature from classic folklore which was described as a giant rooster with some lizard or dragon-like characteristics. It was reported to be hatched from a hen's egg laid in the nest of a serpent or in some accounts a toad. The Cockatice could turn people to stone by looking at them, or in some accounts breathing on them. It is considered similar to, yet different from the Basilisk (see Basilic), which is hatched from a serpent's egg in a hen's nest.
