Wyrm (Flying)
Dragons, wyverns and wyrms are often confused by adventurers young and old. The largest and most deadly of the three are the Wyrms. Rarely seen by even the most courageous of adventurer, Wyrms can grow to be the size of several marid, and when the spirit pleases, take flight with the ease of a colibri. Deadly both in air and on the ground, these magnificent creatures must not be taken lightly, and should be given a great deal of respect by all who pass their way.

Rewards for defeating any of the great Wyrms are themselves great and varied. In addition to a wide variety of rare crafting materials, victorious adventurers could find themselves holding magical swords, armor or abjurations – and these are but a few of the treasures that are hoarded by these great dragons.

Historical Background

Wyrm is the Germanic word for dragon (Old English: wyrm, Old High German: wurm, Old Norse: ormr) and means snake or serpent. In Old English wyrm means "serpent", draca means "dragon". Though a winged creature, the wyrm is generally to be found in its underground lair. This cave identifies it as an ancient creature of earth, like the mythic serpent that was a source of knowledge even in Eden; knowledge is the temptation. Likely, the dragons of European and Middle Eastern mythology stem from the cult of snakes found in religions throughout the world.

The wyrm is typically the dragon of the modern period usually depicted as a huge fire-breathing, scaly and horned dinosaur-like creature, with leathery wings, with four legs and a long muscular tail. It is sometimes shown with feathered wings, crests, fiery manes, and various exotic colorations. Iconically it has at last combined the Chinese dragon with the western one.

In modern fantasy, such as in Dungeon and Dragons, a Wyrm is usually a dragon at its oldest and most powerful form, the final stage of its life. This type of Wyrm hoards treasure and is one of the toughest foes around.
