Pixies
During the Crystal War, repeated eye-witness accounts were received from the battlefields of volant creatures resembling what until then had been nothing more than legend. All reports indicated that these pixies, as they came to be called, had the power to wield magic as well as manipulate the winds. At the time, such accounts were dismissed by the nations' armies as hallucinations, brought about by the enormous mental strains of war.

Most wild Pixies will generally follow a habitual route over a large area. Sidhe are the only currently known exception to this rule.

Pixies will cast white magic on nearby players, including: all tiers of the Cure spell along with Raise II and Raise III. However, Pixies often must rest a short time period after casting a spell before they are able to use another (unless they are being directly threatened).

Pixies have also been observed in the forsaken realm of Abyssea. Abyssean pixies, however, display none of the friendly behavior common to their Vana'dialian counterparts; rather, most appear to be highly apathetic towards adventurers, and some are downright hostile.

Pixie hate[]

Pixie-type mobs often cure you and even raise you when you fall in battle. Killing Pixie-type mobs causes their population to decrease in the past, as well as the present. Whether or not a pixie will pop is determined by how safe they feel, a measure relating the times they were killed to the times they could "live safely." This can even go as far as to keep pixies from spawning at all in any zone. Trading a Bottled Pixie to the Fay Spring will help to build up their population over time. That said, trading Bottled Pixies has no effect on individual adventurers, but influences the entire server's status with the Pixie race. See the Witchfire Glen quest for more information.

Note: NM pixies do not cure other players, and do not affect pixie hate. Pixies within Abyssea also do not affect pixie hate.

Historical Background[]

In British folklore (specifically from Cornwall and Devon), pixies are diminutive spirit-like humanoids with insectoid wings. They were thought to reside in downs and moors and were known for playing tricks on people. Among their routine tricks were to steal horses and ride them across the moors at night, stealing objects from residences, throwing objects at people, and misleading travelers (“being led by pixies”) or sometimes luring people away to disappear forever. Pixies are said to be repulsed by silver.

Pixies were not all antagonistic. They were thought to perform household chores at any time of day if respected and given gifts of food or milk. Pixies are also known for pixie dust (fairy dust), a sparkling residual found trailing behind them.

The pixie’s origin has multiple versions. The general version is they were but one of many spirits that inhabited Britain without any particular backstory. After Christianity took hold on the island, the pixie’s origin changed to be Celtic druids who refused to convert to Christianity and grew progressively smaller the more they resisted conversion. Another origin story portrayed pixies as spirit beings that were morally neutral and thus unable to be accepted into heaven or cast into hell, thus being forced to roam the earth for eternity.

Pixie is also the origin of the word pixilated, which means confused, crazy, bewildered, or acting whimsical. Despite the close appearance, it is not the origin of the word pixel and term pixelated. Pixel derives from “pix element”, with pix being a common abbreviation for pictures in the 20th century.
