Gargouilles
Gargouille
Perhaps every misbehaving San d'Orian child has had nightmares of the gargouille effigies that once graced the proud San d'Orian Cathedral coming to life and stealing away the souls of those who lack proper discipline and self-control. While the story may have been a childhood fable meant to instill the best qualities in restless young ones, when it was discovered during the Crystal War that the Allied Forces had to contend with similar living, breathing beasts, the church leadership quickly (and rather quietly) dismantled all traces of the statuary from the cathedral.

Several conjectures existed to explain the origin and the nature of these bitter enemies of Altana. Some thought them to be the product of an unholy union between imps, demons and the very earth itself. Others speculated that they were drawn from the nightmares of Altana's children, made flesh and stone by the wicked forces behind the war. Still more found them to be not truly living, but more like the magic dolls of Windurst, with near mindless, automated servitude. Whatever the case, gargouille are still formidable foes, possessing not only the power of flight and fear, but commanding potent dark attacks, as well as being able to rally their strength by focusing on the thrill and the triumph of victory.

Gargouille have not been seen since the climatic battles of the Northlands that brought an end to the Great War, giving some credence the “borne from a dream” hypothesis. Perhaps because of their obscure origins and unique nature, academics and crafters both have a high demand for the varied gargouille remains that have lasted into the Present Day.

Historical Background

The gargouille was a dragon and legendary creature originating from France. Known by name as Garguiem and not to be confused with gargoyle, it was allegedly a serpent-like water-spouting dragon that appeared in the Seine River in France. It was said to terrorize boats and flood the land. In legend, Saint Romain, the archbishop of Rouen, lured the monster to shore using a convict, and then made a cross with his fingers to tame the monster. He then led it into town where it was slaughtered. Some accounts say it was burned. The accounts of burning say that neither the monster's head or neck would burn, so they were mounted on the town's cathedral to display God's power. The creature was then said to have been carved onto buildings to be used as water drainage, therefore creating the modern gargoyle. It is similarly accounted that they have no relation other than their water-spouting abilities, leading to the words' similarities.
