Augments add effects to an item's base statistics. Often, when examining which gear is best for a given situation, some types of Augments are overlooked due to the age and obscurity of the systems that create them.
There are many different methods and sources for augmented gear, listed below; some equipment can be augmented by players, other equipment is obtained augmented.
All of them fall into two categories: Random Augments and Fixed Augments.
- Fixed Augments may be either a number of standard augments, or a choice between multiple path augments.
- Multiple Path Augments may be either standard augments, or progressive augments that increase to a maximum value as conditions are met.
A single augment may consist of more than one additional effect.
In the case of random augments, a negative effect may rarely occur, but otherwise augments are positive.
In summary, the Augment Systems listed below are noted to be either:
- Player
- Obtained
via one of:
- Random Augment
- Fixed Standard Augment
- Fixed Multiple Path Standard Augment
- Fixed Multiple Path Progressive Augment
Items that have been augmented are exclusive and cannot be traded with other players, sold on the Auction House, in Bazaars, or stored with Armor Depositories (with a singular exception). They can still be desynthesised, sold to NPCs for the same price as, and used in quests that require the base piece of equipment.
Augment Systems[]
Field Parchment (2009)[]
Player, Random Augment - see Field Parchment for details.
This initial augment method was random and could result in both beneficial or detrimental effects. Nearly any piece of non-Rare equipment from level 1-75 can be augmented (around over 2,000 items), but because of the extremely high chance of receiving irrelevant/detrimental effects that could not subsequently be removed, this system proved unpopular. For these reasons, no master list of neither items nor augments available though this system has been catalogued (though a brief attempt can be found here).

Tenshodo Treasure Coffer (2009)[]
Obtained, Random Augment - see Treasure Coffer (Tenshodo) for details.
Each of the first three Add-ons introduced a number of repeatable battlefields, the reward for which includes one of six Key key items (eighteen total). Inspecting the Treasure Coffer at the Tenshodo Headquarters in Jeuno with such a key item results in a random reward of either an item or an augmented piece of equipment from a short list that can be found on each key item's article page. The augments recorded for the pieces of equipment are mainly beneficial, though some reports of minor detrimental effects have been recorded.

Add-On Scenarios (2009)[]
Obtained, Fixed Standard Augment x2
The final reward from each of the first three Add-ons is a choice of one of three items augmented with two additional attributes as selected from a list by the player. They are also exchanged for Key key items at the Treasure Coffer (Tenshodo). If a player wants to change the selected item or augments, they must discard the item they had and re-clear the pertinent final battlefield to re-obtain the necessary Key key item.
The Treasure Coffer (Tenshodo) was added in the April 2009 Version Update along with the Prismatic Key from A Crystalline Prophecy. The Oxblood key was added in the July 2009 Version Update as part of A Moogle Kupo d'Etat. The Behemoth key was added in the November 2009 Version Update as part of A Shantotto Ascension.
