Historical Background[]
In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Bifrons (also spelled Bifrovs, Bifröus) is a demon with the title of Earl of Hell (or Count in some accounts), commanding 6 legions of demons (26 in other accounts). He appears as a monster (no specific details), but can turn into a shape of a man. He can teach his conjurer the sciences and the arts, as well as knowledge of gems, herbs, and types of wood. He can also move corpses around the world with ease, often doing this by placing magical candles on the graves. Bifrons appears to originate with one of the alternate names for the Roman God Janus, Bifrons. Bifrons is also supposedly one of the names given to Baphomet by the Knights Templar. Bifrons is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and 1 of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
