Bahram, also spelled: Bakhram or Vahram, is a Persian word meaning "smiting of resistance" or "victorious". It refers to a wide array of many historical and mythological persons. Bahrām, in Zoroastrian divinity, is the hypostatic abstraction of victory. Bakhram is also a popular character in Azerbaijani and Iranian mythology, loosely historically based on Bahram Gur, the the fourteenth Sassanid King of Persia. Bahram also refers to about seven Sassanid kings by that name. Bahram is also the name of several other historical people including: Gushnasp Vahram the 6th century Armenian king, Muiz ud din Bahram the sixth sultan of Delhi, Thug Behram a 19th century serial killer from the Indian Thuggee cult, in addition to being a popular Persian given name for males. Lastly, Bahram is the Persian language name for the planet Mars.
